A evergreen sent by Middlebury College as a gift from Vermont, President Calvin Coolidge's home state, stands just behind the White House in this 1923 view. That year the tree was presented to the president as a national holiday symbol, and its placement linked the Christmas season to the executive mansion and to Coolidge's Vermont roots. The National Photo Company, which recorded Washington streets, buildings and public events throughout the 1920s, captured the scene as part of its broad view of the capital.
