A horse-free "post office on wheels" rolled through the streets of Washington, D.C., in December 1921, according to the caption, which pairs a mail truck with Santa Claus and holiday decorations. The picture was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded daily life in the capital in the early 1920s. By then motor trucks were steadily replacing horse-drawn wagons in city mail service, and the holiday rush brought heavy parcel and card traffic. The staged, festive scene shows how the Post Office Department tried to promote its work to the public during the busiest mailing season of the year.
