Santa Claus and an airplane share the frame in this 1917 Christmas scene, a pairing that suggests how the holiday was marked in military settings that year. The United States had entered the First World War in April 1917, and the Army's Quartermaster Corps, which handled supplies and equipment for the troops, produced this print. Aviation was a new and closely watched field at the time, so seeing an aircraft beside the traditional gift-bringer is worth noticing as a sign of wartime concerns meeting holiday cheer.
