In this c1909 print, Santa Claus rides a sled loaded with toys, but the team pulling it is a flock of white turkeys rather than reindeer, a playful swap that would have drawn a smile from holiday viewers. The copyright credit names Schrader & Dennis of Three Oaks, Michigan, a small village in the southwest part of the state, suggesting a local studio that produced staged novelty scenes of this kind. Around the turn of the 20th century, staged Christmas pictures and holiday postcards often used humor and farm animals to make the season feel familiar and cheerful. The catalog data comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so the photographer's exact role and the scene's setup remain uncertain.
