Children gather around a Christmas tree piled with toys in this stereograph, and the poem printed on its back, A.T. Worden's "The Gooseville Christmas-tree," ties the card to the popular verse of its day. George Barker, who published the card around 1889 in Niagara Falls, New York, sold many such views to be seen through a stereoscope in the parlor. Cards like this combined the scene and a verse, and they were often bought as holiday gifts. Christmas trees were still fairly new to many American homes at the time, which makes scenes like this a useful record of how the holiday was celebrated.
