Norman Rockwell's painting *The Day After Christmas* reached readers as a color halftone reproduction in the December 1922 issue of *Farm and Fireside*, a family magazine aimed largely at rural households. Rockwell was in his late twenties and already a busy illustrator, and magazines like this one relied on him for holiday cover and story art. The halftone process, which broke a painting into tiny dots that printing presses could reproduce, let publishers bring original artwork into millions of homes at modest cost. The image shows how illustration carried the mood of the season into print.
