A color poster from 1895, issued by the New York publisher C. Scribner's Sons, uses the holiday season to promote the firm's books and magazine. Louis John Rhead, an English-born artist who worked in America in the 1890s, designed it during the period when color posters were spreading through American shops and streets. Holiday advertising of this kind was meant to catch the eye of shoppers as they chose gifts, and it shows how publishers marketed their wares as Christmas approached.
