A delivery truck strung with holiday garlands served as a rolling post office on the streets of Washington, D.C., in the years between the world wars. Trucks like this were put to use during the Christmas rush, when mail and parcel volume surged and carriers needed to reach customers beyond the fixed post office counters. The photograph came from Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for stereographs and news pictures, and it shows how the Postal Service dressed up its seasonal operations for the public.
