Few early twentieth-century holiday scenes capture daily routine as plainly as a post office at Christmas, when mail volume peaked each December. The title comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on its negatives and has not been independently confirmed, so the exact location is uncertain. The company, a Washington, D.C. commercial studio, photographed city and government life throughout this period, and Herbert A. French gave these negatives in 1947. Look closely for streaks and blemishes, which come from natural deterioration of the original glass coatings.
