Here a child stands among lions, lambs and other animals, all gathered in calm, which makes the "peaceable kingdom" of the title easy to read at a glance. The image draws on Isaiah 11:6-9, where the wolf lies down with the lamb and a little child leads them, a passage painters such as Edward Hicks made famous in the nineteenth century. Fritz Eichenberg, a German-born American wood engraver, produced it as a Christmas card in 1960, when the Cold War hung heavily over holiday greetings. Its mustard-colored paper and the signature cut into the block add to its handmade quality.
