The Federal theater Project's marionette unit in Boston staged Dickens's A Christmas Carol with hand-worked puppets rather than live actors, a choice that let a small company put a full holiday story on stage during the Depression. The silkscreen poster was produced under the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists and theater workers in those years, and it reflects the vivid, flat-color style of the federal poster program. Dickens's tale of Scrooge and the Cratchit family was a natural fit for the season, and the puppet staging gave the familiar characters a playful, storybook quality worth noticing.
