The title points to Charles Dickens's 1843 novella *A Christmas Carol*, the story of the miserly London businessman Ebenezer Scrooge, who is shown the error of his ways by a series of spirits on Christmas Eve. The book appeared as Christmas customs in Britain and America were being revived and reshaped, with family dinners, decorated trees and charitable giving growing central to the holiday. Pictures inspired by the tale often show Scrooge's change of heart or the Cratchit family's modest feast, scenes that helped spread the story's warm, sentimental view of the season.
