Richard E. Byrd, the American naval officer and polar explorer, painted this gouache Christmas card, and its distinctive feature is the message: if Santa Claus ever visits the South Pole, Byrd will name a glacier or mountain range after him, as he has already done for several other Santa Clauses. The card is dated December 1934, when Byrd was in Antarctica leading his second expedition, which ran from 1933 to 1935. Naming features after sponsors and friends was a real habit of his, so the joke rests on familiar ground. The painted sheet mixes holiday cheer with the serious business of exploring the ice.
