This large glass-plate negative shows the pattern shop of the Sheffield Car Company in Three Rivers, Michigan, a small manufacturing city in the southwestern part of the state. The photograph is of a drawing signed by the Gies Co., so the picture records a design on paper rather than the parts themselves. Pattern shops made the wooden molds from which metal castings were formed, so the room was central to building vehicles by hand before assembly-line production took hold. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view between about 1890 and 1910, documented American towns and industries across the country during these decades.
