The S.S. Deutschland was a Hamburg America Line passenger liner that entered service in 1900 and briefly held the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing. This large glass negative, 11 by 14 inches, was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented scenes across the United States and abroad around 1900. Plates of this size recorded considerable detail, which suits a subject like a steamship whose design drew wide attention. The negative was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
