A butcher shop in Herzegovina, recorded under the title "St. Bon Ossko," sets this glass negative apart from the other views on the board, though the record places it there only probably. Herzegovina was under Austro-Hungarian administration from 1878 until 1918, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which made the plate, sold views of places across Europe and beyond in the years around 1900. The jacket notes that the negative was made especially for the National Cash Register Company, which suggests a commercial commission, and the 8 by 10 inch plate is an unusually large format for this kind of street-level scene.
