Unlike the street-front views common on this board, this photograph looks inward at the working interior of Crooks & Brooker, a hardware business in Adelaide, South Australia. The negative's jacket states that it was made for the National Cash Register Company, and the registers visible among the counters suggest the purpose: the firm wanted pictures of its machines in real retail use. Detroit Publishing Company, which issued large numbers of views of towns and businesses between about 1895 and 1910, made the image on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate. Worth noticing are the goods stacked high along the shelves, which show how much stock a shop of this kind kept within a clerk's reach.
