A grocery store in Luxembourg, a small grand duchy in western Europe, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company made it sometime between 1897 and 1910, and the negative's jacket is marked as made especially for the National Cash Register Company, which hints at how the image was packaged for a commercial client. The record notes that the picture was copied from a print bearing the mark of the Grand Ducal Court photographer, so the original view came from a court-affiliated studio. The Detroit Publishing Company was known for travel views of Europe and America, and shop scenes like this one record everyday commerce from a period before modern supermarkets.
