The Woodmill was a working facility of the Merchants' Despatch Transportation Company, a freight line that ran its own fast freight cars over the railroads and was a major shipper in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, the kind of large-format plate that gave the Detroit Publishing Company sharp detail for its catalog views. The company, which took over the Detroit Photographic Company's operations, documented American towns, industry, and railroads in the years around 1900, so this view offers a record of industrial infrastructure from that period.
