Few college portraits from this period capture a whole class at once, and this one shows the Western College for Women's graduating students of 1904 gathered for a formal group sitting in Oxford, Ohio. The Western College was among the earliest colleges established for women in the Midwest, founded in 1853, and it drew students who pursued a classical or literary education at a time when higher learning for women was still being debated. The plate is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American towns, landmarks and people around 1900 to 1915. Note the later "1910" inscribed on the negative, which suggests it was printed or used again several years after the class was photographed.
