Copyright registration in late January 1893 places this print on the eve of the four hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage, when American publishers and artists produced many images of the explorer. The scene commemorates Columbus's landing in the Americas, an event Americans of the period often celebrated as a founding moment for their nation. The maker is not firmly identified, so the composition itself is the best clue to what its publisher hoped viewers would take from it.
