Columbus's arrival in the Caribbean is staged here in a hand-colored lithograph, with Indigenous islanders shown in clothing the artist imagined for 1492. Dated between 1860 and 1880, it reflects how 19th-century American audiences pictured the voyage as a heroic discovery. Hand coloring was common in that era and made such prints affordable popular images. Worth noticing is how the scene packs the encounter into one dramatic moment, leaving out the longer history that followed.
