The title places this scene at San Salvador in the West Indies on October 12, 1492, the day Christopher Columbus first reached land on his voyage across the Atlantic. The lithograph was adapted from a painting by the Spanish artist D. Puebla and published in New York by Currier & Ives around 1892, the 400th anniversary of that landing. The anniversary drew wide attention to Columbus, and the print reflects the nineteenth-century American tendency to portray him as a heroic founder. Like many of the firm's popular prints, it was made to reach a broad middle-class audience.
