This tinted lithograph, titled *The first sight of the new world*, is dated about May 23, 1892, and it shows Christopher Columbus and his sailors at the moment they first sight land. It appeared during the four-hundredth anniversary of his 1492 voyage, when American printmakers produced many commemorative pictures of the event. The print's subjects include the sailors as well as Columbus, which places the discovery in human terms rather than focusing only on the explorer. The added color softens the scene and turns a historical landing into a romantic tableau, a common approach in popular prints of the period.
