Aguadilla, on Puerto Rico's northwest coast, is the place the caption identifies as Columbus's first landing on the island, which he reached on his second voyage in 1493. This stereograph, dated about 1899, shows a town at a time when Spain had just ceded Puerto Rico to the United States after the Spanish-American War. The caption card notes thatched-roof houses, a detail that points to the simple local construction of the period. Because the record comes from old caption data that has not been verified, its date and labels are best read as approximate.
