Columbus came ashore on Hispaniola on December 6, 1492, and this engraving shows his meeting with the Arawak people who lived on the island. The print was made by Theodor de Bry, a Flemish-born engraver whose Frankfurt publications spread images of the Americas across Europe in the late 1500s. De Bry worked from printed accounts of the voyages rather than firsthand sketches, so the scene reflects European ideas about the encounter as much as what happened on the shore. The record's date and publication details are unverified, so the exact year of printing is uncertain.
