This lithograph, issued by Currier & Ives in New York in 1892, was made for the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage across the Atlantic. The print belongs to a wave of commemorative art that swept the United States that year, when the Columbian Exposition in Chicago drew attention to the explorer and to the nation's European roots. Currier & Ives, the firm famous for inexpensive popular lithographs of the nineteenth century, sold such images to a broad public, so the piece reflects how Columbus was being celebrated in ordinary American homes. It is catalogued in the firm's standard reference, Currier & Ives: A catalog Raisonné, which makes it a useful entry point for researchers.
