Christopher Columbus, the Genoese navigator who sailed for Spain, is the subject of this engraved portrait, which was published in New York around 1892 by the firm of Bernard & Jones. The date is significant: 1892 marked the four-hundredth anniversary of Columbus's first voyage across the Atlantic, and American publishers produced a wave of commemorative prints, books and souvenirs that year. Engravings like this one were widely sold to households and schools, where they helped fix a heroic image of the explorer in the public mind. The print's title, "Discoverer of America," reflects the celebratory tone of the quadricentennial.
