Rather than a full-length scene, this etching centers on a bust portrait of Christopher Columbus, facing right, set inside a medallion. Two smaller vignettes flank the portrait: one shows Columbus apparently demonstrating that the world is round to a group gathered around a table, and the other shows him at the Convent of La Rabida near Palos, Spain, where he is traditionally said to have sought support for his voyage. The print was published in Paris and Washington around 1892, the 400th anniversary of his first crossing, when commemorative images of Columbus were widely produced. The round-earth scene reflects a popular anecdote rather than a documented event, so it is best read as later storytelling about the explorer.
