Few sitters on this board share a first name with the city they're filed under, and Columbus Delano (1809-1896) was an Ohio lawyer and politician whose name is the only link to the city. This half-length portrait, shown facing right, is undated on its caption card, so it is best placed in the later decades of his public life. Delano served as Secretary of the Interior under President Ulysses S. Grant from 1870 to 1875, overseeing the General Land Office, the Indian Bureau, and the Pension Bureau during a period of rapid western settlement. He resigned in 1875 amid scandals in his department, which makes his image a useful reference point for that era of federal administration.
