Most portraits of Christopher Columbus show him in full figure or at a desk with charts, so this bust-length profile, turned to the left, stands apart for its restraint. The caption card gives his dates, 1451 to 1506, but records no date for the print itself, so the engraving's origin has to be placed by style rather than by documentation. Engraved likenesses of Columbus circulated widely from the sixteenth century onward, when his voyages across the Atlantic had made him a figure of European fascination and later of national myth. Look closely at the line work in the face and collar, which shows how engravers built tone with dense hatching.
