Columbus, the explorer, appears here in an engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry, the Frankfurt-based printmaker whose workshop produced many of the illustrated travel and voyage books of the late 16th century. The record gives no date beyond the note that the piece is 16th century, so the image should be read as a later-period European portrait of the navigator rather than a sketch made from life. De Bry's engravings of the Americas helped shape how Northern European readers pictured the Columbian voyages, and this one is worth studying for that role in spreading the image of the explorer.
