Here Christopher Columbus stands before Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish monarchs who financed his voyages, in a scene the artist placed at court rather than on shipboard. The composition was painted by Vincent Brozik, a Bohemian-born history painter who worked in Paris and specialized in dramatic episodes from the past. This chromolithograph was issued around 1884 by Mast, Crowell & Kirkpatrick of Springfield, Ohio, a publisher that sold colored reproductions of popular paintings to American households. The print shows how 19th-century audiences imagined the moment when Spain's backing made the 1492 voyage possible.
