Columbus's departure from Spain is the subject here, rather than one of the New World scenes that fill the rest of this board. The print is an engraving published in London by J. Edwards around 1800, with the question mark in the date signaling that the exact year is uncertain. It appears as plate VIII in a later edition of America, part 4, the series of voyages and travel accounts first issued by Theodore de Bry in the 1590s. Because the engraving depicts a voyage from 1492 but was made more than three centuries later, it shows how European readers of the 1800s pictured the start of the Atlantic crossing.
