The title calls La Isabela the "first city in America," a claim tied to Christopher Columbus, who founded the settlement on the north coast of Hispaniola, in today's Dominican Republic, during his second voyage. This c1893 photograph by F.L. Vasquez records the site as it appeared in the 1890s, when interest in Columbus's landings was high ahead of the 400th anniversary of 1492. Columbus named the town for Queen Isabella of Castile, but it was abandoned within a few years, after the colony shifted to what became Santo Domingo. Its brief existence makes the site's reputation as a founding city more interesting than its size.
