Columbus stands before the Spanish sovereigns at Barcelona, where Ferdinand and Isabella received him in 1493 after his first Atlantic voyage and heard his account of the lands he had reached. The image is an engraving by E.H. De L'Orme after a painting by R. Balaca, so its composition reflects the painter's imagining of the audience rather than a firsthand record of it. The caption card gives no date, and its attribution details are unverified, so the print is best read as a later artist's view of a famous moment in Spanish history.
