The caption card for this view points to the conservatories at Franklin Park, the city's large east-side park, so the picture centers on its glasshouses rather than the open lawns and paths. Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many photographic views of American towns and parks around 1900 to 1910, copyrighted the print, and its catalog was built for travelers and armchair tourists who wanted scenes of notable places. Because the record's details are unverified, the exact date and the building shown are best treated as provisional, but the image still offers a useful look at how civic parks and their glass houses were presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
