The monument to Charles Benton Flagg stands at the left edge of this view of Goodale Park in Columbus, Ohio, a detail that anchors the scene to a specific memorial rather than the park in general. The photograph dates from between 1900 and 1915, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting American towns, parks and landmarks on large glass plate negatives. Those views were later sold as color prints, so the image reflects how city parks were arranged and used as public gathering spaces in the early twentieth century. The negative's large 8 by 10 inch format gives it considerable detail in paths, plantings and the sculpted memorial.
