Cracked and mended with tape onto a second sheet of glass, this 8 x 10 inch dry plate negative of Columbus's city hall has survived more damage than most plates of its age. The Detroit Publishing Company made it, a firm that sent photographers across the United States around 1900 to record towns, streets and public buildings for sale as books and color prints. The record dates the negative to between 1900 and 1910, and the view includes the street as well as the building, showing how a municipal center presented itself to residents and visitors in that era.
