Beyond the bracketed title and the 1872 date, the record offers few details, so this lithograph is best read as a view of the Ohio capital in the years after the Civil War. Sheets from the 1870s often showed American cities from an elevated, bird's-eye vantage, and they were sold to residents and used to promote local businesses and civic pride. Columbus, the seat of state government on the Scioto River, was growing steadily during this period, and the high viewpoint lets viewers compare its streets, rooftops and public buildings with the town as it appeared then.
