The 29th Annual Convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, held in Columbus, Ohio, in 1938, is the event this print records. The NAACP was founded in 1909 to fight segregation and discrimination through legal challenges, public advocacy and organizing, and its annual conventions brought together members, delegates and local leaders to set priorities and celebrate progress. Gatherings like this one in the late 1930s took place during the Great Depression and under Jim Crow laws across much of the country, so a convention held in a Northern industrial city such as Columbus carried particular weight as a public statement of civil rights organizing.
