Senator Richard Nixon stands between Arthur Summerfield and Ray C. Bliss at the Ohio State Republican convention in Columbus, a photograph that shows a rising national figure at a state party gathering in 1952. That year Nixon, a first-term senator from California, was chosen as Dwight D. Eisenhower's running mate, and state conventions like this one were where party organizers built the support that carried candidates into the national race. Summerfield later served as Postmaster General under Eisenhower, and Bliss became one of the most respected Ohio party organizers of his generation.
