Drawn by the English illustrator John Gilbert, this wood engraving ran on the cover of *Harper's Weekly* on May 30, 1868. It shows Christopher Columbus explaining his discovery to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, the monarchs who had backed his voyage of 1492. Gilbert was known for dramatic scenes from history and literature, and this one reflects the nineteenth-century taste for heroic moments in the age of exploration.
