The sculptor Ettore Ximenes is shown posing in his studio beside a full-scale statue of Christopher Columbus, a figure that was a common subject for Italian-born artists working in America in the early 1900s. Ximenes trained in Italy and became known for public monuments, and his studio work was often photographed as the plaster or clay model moved toward casting in bronze or marble. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption information the Bain News Service supplied, which has not been independently verified. The Bain Collection's glass negatives mostly date from the early twentieth century, so the picture likely belongs to that period.
