The statue of Christopher Columbus stands in front of Genoa's railway station, so the picture places the navigator's monument at the point where travelers first arrived in his birthplace by train. Columbus was born in Genoa, and the city honored him with monuments throughout the nineteenth century, when rail lines were bringing more visitors to Italian cities. This print comes from an album of European city views that also included Pisa, Nice, Milan and Vienna, and it shows how photographers of the period paired civic monuments with the new transportation hubs that served them.
