This halftone pairs a statue of Christopher Columbus with the cathedral in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and it dates to about 1893. The cathedral, begun in the early 1500s, is often described as the oldest cathedral in the Americas, and its long association with Columbus, whose remains were long venerated there, made the two a natural pairing for a city that prided itself on its colonial origins. The print was issued as an illustration in a series of halftone views from the 1890s, when new printing methods made photographs of distant places widely available. Its pairing of a monument and a church offers a useful glimpse of how the city presented its historic center to the outside world.
