The bell tower belongs to the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor in Santo Domingo, begun in 1514 and often called the oldest cathedral in the Americas. Its popular name, Columbus Cathedral, comes from the long-disputed claim that Christopher Columbus's remains were kept there. The caption card's question mark after "S.D." means the city is not fully confirmed, though the cathedral matches the title. Photographs from around 1904 to 1905 record a period when travelers and collectors were drawn to Caribbean colonial architecture, and the card's tracings, including "Churches" and "Bell Towers," show how such views were grouped by subject.
