Christopher Columbus stands on the deck of the Santa Maria, the flagship of his 1492 voyage, in this scene painted by the German history painter Carl von Piloty. Piloty worked in Munich and was known for large, carefully staged episodes from the past. This image survives as a halftone reproduction, a process that let books and periodicals print photographs of paintings in quantity around the turn of the twentieth century. The print is dated about 1908 and carries a copyright notice in the name of Eugene A. Perry, though these details come from an old caption card and have not been verified.
