A bronze statue of Christopher Columbus stands on the Paseo de la Reforma, the broad avenue cutting through Mexico City, and this view captures it sometime between 1880 and 1897. Maximilian laid out the Reforma in the 1860s to rival the boulevards of Paris, and monuments like this one were placed along it to give the capital a grand, European character. The photograph is attributed to William Henry Jackson, whose catalog of views lists it under the Paseo. The pairing of a navigator's likeness with a modern avenue shows how the city's leaders linked their capital to the wider Western world.
