A 1922 glass negative from the National Photo Company shows a statue of Christopher Columbus, a monument type that appears often in early twentieth-century American street scenes. The company made views of towns and cities for publishers and postcard makers, so its plates often record local civic monuments. Many Columbus statues went up after the 400th anniversary of his voyage in 1892, when cities and Italian American groups commissioned memorials to him. The glass has streaks and blemishes from deterioration in its original coating, which can blur fine detail.
